Freedom Forever bankruptcy converted to Chapter 7 liquidation, key dates set

September 9, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 62

Freedom Forever, once the second-largest home solar installer in the country, has moved from Chapter 11 bankruptcy into Chapter 7 liquidation. The company filed for Chapter 11 in April 2026 and spent months trying to sell itself or find an outside investor to keep it running, similar to what happened with SunPower last year. That effort failed, and on August 7, 2026, the case converted to liquidation, with a court-appointed trustee now winding down the company's remaining assets.

If you had a deposit, warranty claim, or other unresolved business with Freedom Forever, the court has set October 16, 2026 as the deadline to file a formal claim in the case. A creditors' meeting is scheduled for September 22, 2026. Separately, former employees have filed lawsuits alleging the company laid off roughly 1,600 workers without the legal notice required when a mass layoff happens.

For homeowners with an unfinished solar installation financed through Freedom Forever, there is some practical news: the court has cleared the way for former financing partners — including Credit Human, EnFin, EverBright, GoodLeap, Participate, Project Solar and Sunrun — to step in and finish stranded projects. These lenders can now hire new contractors, complete the physical installation, and get systems approved for operation without going back to court each time. GoodLeap specifically was given permission to take possession of project equipment to finish jobs, and EnFin is authorized to have its consigned hardware returned. If your system was left incomplete, the financing company tied to your loan may be the one now coordinating what happens next.
