Ford’s Fathom pickup couldn’t come soon enough as EV sales drop 80% in Q3

October 2, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 38

Ford's electric vehicle sales dropped sharply in the third quarter, falling 80% to just over 6,000 vehicles sold. The company's F-150 Lightning electric pickup saw sales plunge 97%, and the Mustang Mach-E dropped 72%. Part of the decline follows the end of the federal $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles last September, which had pulled some buyers into making purchases before the deadline passed.

Looking ahead, Ford plans to launch a new electric pickup called the Fathom in early 2027, priced under $30,000 including delivery fees. The company has said it hopes to sell 100,000 of these trucks in the first year, which would put it among the best-selling EVs in the country. However, Ford's own CEO has acknowledged the 2027 timeline presents a real challenge to hit on schedule and on budget, even as a company spokesperson maintains the launch date still stands.

For homeowners weighing an EV purchase, one detail worth noting: Ford has extended an offer for buyers of the 2026 Mustang Mach-E. New buyers can get a free home charger with standard installation, or take a $1,500 cash bonus instead. If you're considering adding a home charging setup as part of a broader electrical upgrade, this kind of manufacturer incentive is worth factoring in alongside any state or utility rebates you might already qualify for.
