Extra precautions on low-slope vented roof
A homeowner building a shop-over-garage in a cold, snowy climate asked about a low-slope roof design: sawn rafters with batt insulation, a vapor membrane between the ceiling and rafters, and a vented airspace above under a standing-seam metal roof. His roof slope is shallow, around 2.25:12, with a small section nearly flat. He wanted to know whether he needed a "smart" vapor barrier (a membrane that changes how much moisture it lets through depending on humidity) as backup protection, and whether it was worth adding extra venting near the roof ridge since snow would likely bury the ridge vent for months each winter.
Building science experts responding to the post said his plan should work fine if built carefully. Because his climate has very dry summers, a smart vapor barrier would add little benefit; a standard poly vapor barrier is enough since the risk in his area comes from winter moisture moving from inside to outside, not the other way around. They also said he does not need to add supplemental ridge venting — the standard path for air to flow from the eaves to the ridge should be sufficient, even with snow cover part of the year.
For homeowners with similar cathedral or low-slope vented roofs, the main lesson is that careful air sealing and adequate airflow from eaves to ridge generally matter more than upgrading to premium vapor barrier products, especially in dry, cold climates where moisture mainly moves outward through the roof in winter.
