EVs At 37.7% Share In Germany – Tesla Model Y Leads

July 26, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 12

Electric vehicles made up 37.7% of new car sales in Germany in the second quarter of 2026, up from 28.6% a year earlier. Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 26.5% of sales, up sharply from 18.4%, while plug-in hybrids grew more slowly, reaching 11.2%. Total car sales in Germany rose about 6% year over year. The Tesla Model Y was the top-selling electric model, followed closely by the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Skoda Elroq.

The jump in electric car sales is tied to two things: Germany brought back purchase incentives for EVs, and oil prices have climbed due to conflict in the Middle East, making gas and diesel more expensive to run. Traditional gas and diesel cars kept losing ground, with gas dropping from 28.2% to 21.2% of sales and diesel from 14.7% to 12.3%. Analysts expect electric and plug-in hybrid sales combined to approach, or even reach, half of all new car sales in Germany by the end of the year.

This news is about Germany's car market, not home energy programs, so it does not affect any rebates or incentives available to homeowners elsewhere. It is a sign of how quickly electric vehicles are gaining ground in Europe as fuel costs rise and government incentives return, a pattern worth watching if similar incentive shifts happen in other countries down the road.
