Europe’s Electric Backbone

September 16, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 23

A coalition of industry, investment, energy, and security groups called the Backbone Coalition has released a report on Europe's battery supply chain, arguing that batteries are central to the continent's energy grid, industrial base, and defense. The report says Europe is installing batteries at record pace, backed by public money, but produces almost none of the raw materials and components that go into them. The coalition is calling on the EU to act over the next three years to build up a more competitive, less import-dependent European battery industry.

This is a policy and industry story rather than a program with new incentives or deadlines for individual households. It doesn't change what's available to homeowners looking at battery storage, solar, or heat pumps right now. Rebates, tax credits, and installation programs in your area are unaffected by this report.

The bigger picture is about where the batteries used in things like home battery storage, electric vehicles, and grid equipment ultimately come from, and whether Europe can reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for the materials and manufacturing behind them. If European policy shifts toward more local production over the next few years, it could eventually affect the price or availability of battery-based products sold there, but this report is a call for future action, not a new rule or funding source homeowners can use today.
