Enphase enters commercial battery storage market, announces IQ Battery C80
Enphase, the California company known for home solar and battery equipment, has launched its first battery system built for commercial and industrial buildings rather than houses. The IQ Battery C80 is aimed at sites like schools, retail stores, offices, and warehouses, with shipments expected to start in early 2027.
This is not a product for homeowners. It stores 80 kWh of usable energy, far more than a typical home battery, and arrives pre-assembled to cut down on installation work. It uses lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry, the same type increasingly common in home batteries, along with fire-safety features like smoke and gas detection and an automatic fire-suppression system. The unit is rated to run for 15 years or 7,000 charge cycles, whichever comes first.
Because the system is designed and built with a set amount of domestic content, it can help commercial project owners qualify for bonus tax credits under the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC). It also works with Enphase's software to shift energy use, cut demand charges, take advantage of time-of-day electricity rates, and participate in virtual power plant programs, where utilities tap batteries during high-demand periods.
For most homeowners, this news simply signals that Enphase is expanding beyond residential solar and storage into bigger commercial projects. It does not change anything about the home battery products Enphase already sells, but it may hint at technology or features that eventually show up in future home systems.
