Embodied carbon analysis for Madison Metropolitan School District
The Madison Metropolitan School District in Wisconsin is building 10 new schools under a 2024 referendum, and it set a goal to cut "embodied carbon" — the emissions that come from making, shipping, and installing building materials, as opposed to the energy a building uses once it's running. A detailed study of two of the schools, Black Hawk Middle School and Gompers Elementary, found the district beat its target: a 19% reduction compared to its own baseline, and a 51% reduction compared to a national benchmark for K-12 buildings. The biggest savings came from choices around concrete, carpet and other flooring, and steel decking.
The district also found that renovating an existing school produces roughly half the embodied carbon of building new, since reusing a structure avoids the emissions tied to new materials and demolition. Other ideas raised for future projects include picking masonry with more recycled content, cutting back on brick facades, and mixing steel with wood framing.
This is a school-construction story, not a homeowner program, so there's no rebate or direct action here. But the underlying idea applies at any scale: the materials used in a renovation or addition carry a carbon cost before a building even opens, and choices like flooring, concrete, and reused structure versus new construction can shift that footprint significantly.
