Electrification of Commercial Vehicles Continues at Faster Pace at IAA Transportation 2026
A big truck industry show in Hannover, Germany just wrapped up its opening, and it points to how quickly delivery vans, freight trucks, and other commercial vehicles are shifting away from diesel. Automakers including Volvo, MAN, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis showed off electric trucks now in real production, some with ranges over 600 kilometers, along with electric vans from Kia, Ford, and others. This matters mostly at the industry level for now, but it is worth knowing about if you run a small business with delivery or work vehicles, or if you are simply curious where vehicle electrification is headed next.
Hydrogen also had a strong presence. Some companies are building trucks that use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, while others are testing engines that burn hydrogen directly. Daimler said its hydrogen fuel-cell trucks have already logged nearly 600,000 kilometers with customers, and it plans to put 100 newer versions into service by the end of 2026. Energy companies are also planning large hydrogen fueling stations designed to serve up to 100 trucks a day, with Germany testing the concept first through a government funding program.
None of this changes anything for a home directly, but it is a sign of how fast electrification and hydrogen technology are advancing across transportation, not just passenger cars. The bigger takeaway is that manufacturers are not betting on one single solution. Battery power, hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen combustion, and hybrid systems are all being developed side by side, aimed at different jobs depending on route length and cargo needs.
