E-quipment highlight: iPad-sized 70 kW electric PTO by Windrose

September 2, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 8

This news is about heavy trucking, not home energy upgrades, but it's worth understanding since it's part of the broader shift to electric equipment. Electric semi truck maker Windrose has built a compact electric power take-off (a system that sends power from a vehicle to run separate equipment, like a lift gate or hydraulic pump). Traditionally, diesel trucks tap their running engine to power this kind of equipment, but electric trucks have no engine idling for that purpose, so they need a separate motor and electronics to do the job. Windrose's version is about the size of an iPad, puts out up to 70 kW of power, and is built right into the truck's electric axle, drawing from an 800-volt battery system.

The immediate use case is car-hauling trailers, which need a lot of power to run their ramps and racks. Windrose says it built its own solution because nothing suitable already existed on the market, and industry observers see it as a sign that electric trucks can take over more specialized jobs beyond just hauling freight from point A to point B.

For a homeowner, this doesn't translate into a rebate or a purchase decision. It's a sign that electric trucks are becoming more capable and specialized, which may eventually show up as more electric delivery, utility, and service vehicles on the road, but there's nothing here that affects your house or your energy bills directly.
