Diesel Emission Controls Work…Which Is Why They Are Under Attack
Diesel trucks have gotten much cleaner over the past two decades thanks to pollution control systems required by the EPA. Filters trap soot, and a system that injects diesel exhaust fluid (a urea-based liquid) into the exhaust neutralizes smog-forming nitrogen oxides. When these systems work, they cut pollution by 90 percent or more. To make sure truckers actually fix broken systems, the EPA has long used "inducements" — warning lights, then reduced engine power, then a low-speed limit — that force repairs within a few hundred miles.
Now the EPA and Congress are moving to weaken or eliminate those enforcement measures. The EPA has already widened the window before penalties kick in, letting trucks drive thousands of polluting miles before facing consequences, and a proposed rule in Congress (the "DEF Act") would freeze that loophole in place for 10 years. A separate EPA proposal would scrap the power-reducing penalties entirely and rely only on a dashboard warning light — even though studies show many drivers ignore check-engine lights for months. The EPA is also considering letting engine makers pay fines instead of meeting new, stricter emissions standards next year, and shrinking the required warranty on emissions systems from a truck's full million-mile lifespan down to just 100,000 miles.
None of this requires action from homeowners, but it matters for local air quality. Diesel trucks are the largest source of nitrogen oxide pollution in the country, linked to thousands of premature deaths and tens of thousands of asthma cases yearly. Weakening these enforcement rules could let that pollution rise sharply, especially in communities near highways, ports, and warehouses.
