Common HVAC Shortcuts That Lead to Bigger Problems

August 29, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 64

A trade publication piece aimed at HVAC technicians lays out several shortcuts during routine service calls that can quietly wear down a system over months, even though nothing looks wrong on the day of the visit. The issues include using the wrong cleaning chemical on an air conditioner's coil (which can corrode it over time), skipping a protective coating after cleaning in salty or humid areas, and relying only on an electronic leak detector rather than pairing it with a bubble-solution check to pinpoint the exact leak spot. Other shortcuts involve using the wrong sealant on refrigerant line fittings, and dropping a single tablet into the condensate drain pan (the tray that collects water dripping off the cooling coil) without actually breaking down the slimy microbial buildup, called biofilm, that clogs drains and pipes over time.

None of this points to a scam or dangerous practice; it's a technician-focused reminder that small product and technique choices during a service visit can shorten a system's life or lead to a repeat service call weeks or months later. For a homeowner, the takeaway is mainly background: if your system needs a repeat repair not long after a maintenance visit — a coil that corrodes faster than expected, a leak that keeps recurring at the same joint, or a drain that clogs again soon after cleaning — these are the kinds of underlying causes that can be at play, rather than necessarily a sign of a bigger equipment problem.
