Climavision offers expanded weather forecasting to data centers

September 16, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 28

A weather forecasting company called Climavision is now selling its services to data centers, not just utilities and power producers. The company runs 31 radar stations across 15 states and says its data fills gaps that federal weather monitors miss, giving more precise, localized forecasts.

The idea is that data centers, which increasingly have their own backup generators, batteries, and demand-response systems, can use better forecasts to prepare for grid stress caused by weather. If a storm is coming, or wind and solar output is about to dip, a data center could switch to its own power source ahead of time instead of drawing more from the grid during a shortage.

This is industry news about how large power users manage the grid behind the scenes. It does not involve any program, rebate, or technology available to homeowners. But it does touch on something that affects everyone's electricity: as data centers grow and are asked to act more like small utilities, tools like this are meant to prevent the kind of grid strain that leads to outages or price spikes during extreme weather, the same events that stress your own home's heating and cooling systems. There is nothing to act on here, just a sign that grid operators and big power users are investing more in prediction and preparation as demand from data centers keeps rising.
