China wafer prices fall as August rally fades, polysilicon outlook remains uncertain

September 11, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 26

Prices for solar wafers made in China have dipped again after a brief rally in mid-August. Wafers are the thin slices of silicon that get turned into solar cells, and their cost feeds into the price of solar panels down the line. Industry sources say weaker demand from panel makers is forcing suppliers to cut prices to close deals.

The bigger story is upstream, in polysilicon, the raw material used to make wafers. Chinese industry groups reportedly met last week to discuss cutting 2026 polysilicon output by about 20% from this year's level, with the same cap planned for 2027. Some producers may also pause output in the fourth quarter for upgrades. But the plan's enforceability is unclear, and one source questioned whether it would meaningfully tighten supply, since actual production keeps climbing: China made about 118,900 metric tons of polysilicon in August and is on track for around 124,000 in September, ahead of a seasonal slowdown expected in October when hydropower gets scarcer and electricity costs rise.

For homeowners, this is mostly background noise for now rather than something that changes prices at your door immediately. It reflects ongoing oversupply and price pressure in the global solar manufacturing chain, which has kept solar equipment costs low in recent years. Whether these production-cut efforts eventually push panel prices up is still uncertain, and nothing here points to an immediate change in what installers charge for home solar systems.
