California surpasses 21 GW of energy storage connected to grid
California's grid now has more than 21,000 megawatts of battery storage connected to it, up from less than 700 megawatts in 2019, according to the California Energy Commission. Most of that comes from large utility-scale battery systems, but about 3,000 megawatts comes from more than 300,000 smaller batteries installed at homes, schools, farms, and businesses across the state. These batteries store solar power during the day so it can be used after the sun goes down, instead of relying on gas-fired power plants in the evening.
The shift is already showing up in how the state gets its electricity. Comparing the first half of 2024 to the first half of 2026, solar use grew 22% while natural gas use dropped 51%, and battery capacity on the grid grew 80%. For the first time, California used more solar than natural gas over that six-month stretch. Clean energy sources met all of the grid's demand for at least part of the day on 92% of days so far in 2026.
For a homeowner, this mostly reflects what is happening on the broader grid rather than in any single house. But it points to how home batteries fit into a larger trend: California estimates it will need more than 52,000 megawatts of storage by 2045 to support its goal of 100% clean electricity, and it says it is currently 41% of the way there.
