BYD’s latest flagship SUV secured more than 12,000 orders within 24 hours

September 11, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This news is about car manufacturing in China and doesn't connect to home energy upgrades or rebates, so there isn't a homeowner angle to draw out here. Still, here's what happened.

BYD, the Chinese automaker, launched a new flagship SUV called the Sealion 08 on September 2 and says it collected more than 12,000 orders in the first 24 hours. The SUV comes in fully electric and plug-in hybrid versions, starting around $34,000. The electric version uses a large battery pack that BYD says can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes, with a full charge taking about nine minutes. Range estimates run up to roughly 600 miles depending on configuration, though these figures come from Chinese testing standards that tend to run higher than U.S. ratings.

The Sealion 08 is BYD's latest push into larger, more feature-heavy SUVs, following its Great Tang model, which reportedly drew over 30,000 orders in its first day earlier this year. BYD is best known abroad for smaller, cheaper EVs, but has been expanding into luxury SUVs, trucks, and other segments while also growing its presence in Europe and the UK through its Denza brand. None of this involves U.S. home energy programs, rebates, or equipment relevant to weatherizing or upgrading a house — it's simply a snapshot of how fast one Chinese automaker's newer vehicle lines are selling overseas.
