BYD’s cheapest EV is about to get a ‘big’ sibling: Here’s what it looks like in person
This is a car industry story, not a home energy upgrade topic, so it doesn't connect to decisions about your house. Briefly: automaker BYD is preparing a new electric hatchback in China called the Great Seagull, a larger sibling to its budget Seagull model (sold outside China as the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini). The current Seagull is one of the best-selling EVs in the world, starting around $10,000 in China.
The new version will be noticeably bigger, with a longer body and wheelbase, plus a more powerful electric motor. BYD hasn't released battery details or pricing yet, but the car is expected to use newer battery and fast-charging technology, along with upgraded interior features like a larger touchscreen and redesigned steering wheel. Photos show a car spotted undisguised ahead of its official reveal, with a more distinctive front-end design than the standard Seagull.
BYD says the Great Seagull will go on sale by the end of 2026, though exact pricing isn't confirmed. It's expected to cost somewhat more than the current entry-level Seagull given its larger size and added power. For homeowners, this has no bearing on energy-efficiency upgrades or home rebates — it's simply a look at what's coming next in the EV market, in case you're curious about vehicle options down the road.
