Bus Buyers Have Overwhelmingly Chosen Battery-Electric

October 12, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 15

Transit agencies around the world have largely settled on battery-electric buses over hydrogen fuel-cell buses for zero-emission fleets. A review of 388 purchase records across 81 countries found 13,165 firm orders for battery-electric buses, compared with just 65 hydrogen buses. Battery-electric orders came from 55 different transit agencies, while all the hydrogen buses came from only two buyers, one in China and one in Germany. Current tenders show the same pattern, meaning the gap isn't closing as agencies gain more operating experience.

This is transit news, not a home-upgrade program, but it's a useful data point if you're weighing your own electrification choices. The same basic trade-off between batteries and hydrogen comes up in discussions about home heating and backup power, and the bus market's experience suggests battery technology has pulled far ahead in real-world adoption, even though both approaches can technically work.

The two agencies still buying hydrogen buses have specific reasons: one in China is building out a whole local hydrogen supply system, and the other in Germany already had hydrogen buses in service and chose to expand that fleet. Outside those special cases, buyers are treating battery-electric as the default and hydrogen as the exception that needs to justify itself. For agencies and companies deciding between the two, the practical questions now are less about which technology works and more about things like electrical capacity at depots and reliable charging systems.
