Another Sign That Gasmobiles Are Toast: Honda Adds Muscle To The Wireless EV Charging Movement

October 14, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 16

Honda has joined the push to develop wireless EV charging built right into roads, letting electric vehicles recharge while driving instead of stopping at a plug. Working with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec, Honda has built technology that transfers power magnetically through embedded road equipment. The project is still in validation testing, with a public road demonstration planned starting April 2027. The first target is trucks and other large commercial vehicles, so this is not something headed to a Honda dealership anytime soon.

This fits a broader trend: Germany, Sweden, and several US locations, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Detroit, and Indiana, have tested similar in-road charging. Florida has gone further, building a wireless charging stretch of about four miles into a new 125-mile highway connecting Lake and Orange counties, the first time this kind of system has been designed into a highway from the start rather than added later. The US Department of Energy has also noted that this kind of charging could eventually allow smaller, cheaper EV batteries and lower charging costs.

None of this changes anything about home charging setups right now. Honda's early focus is commercial trucking, not passenger cars, and the technology is years from any public rollout for ordinary drivers. Separately, Honda is phasing out its only fully electric model sold in North America, the Prologue, by 2027, while expanding hybrid models and continuing other battery investments. For homeowners, the practical takeaway is that charging technology keeps evolving, but driveway and garage charging remains the near-term reality for electric vehicles.
