Analysts say Fervo-Google geothermal deal underscores baseload power scarcity

September 2, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 11

Google has signed a deal with Fervo Energy to buy 396 megawatts of power from an underground energy source called enhanced geothermal, which pulls heat from deep rock formations to generate electricity around the clock. It's the largest geothermal power purchase agreement on record. Google has an option to expand the deal to nearly 1 gigawatt by June 2030, with the power meant to help run a planned data center in Utah, though final plans still depend on approvals and other factors.

The power will come from Fervo's Cape Station project in southwestern Utah, expected to come online in 2028. Analysts see the deal as a sign that "baseload" power — steady, always-on electricity, as opposed to sources like solar and wind that vary with weather — is in short supply, especially as AI data centers drive up demand. One research note said the deal boosts Fervo's contracted revenue by roughly 65%. Analysts also flagged risks: this type of geothermal project hasn't been done at this scale before, connecting new power plants to the grid can face delays, the technology requires heavy upfront investment, and other energy sources are competing for the same customers.

For homeowners, this isn't a program or rebate — it's a corporate power deal between a tech company and an energy developer. It matters mainly as a signal about where the electric grid is headed: rising demand from data centers is pushing utilities and companies to lock up new, reliable power sources, which can affect regional grid capacity and, over time, electricity prices.
