Aligned Climate Capital holds first close for $500 million distributed solar, storage fund

September 2, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 42

An investment firm called Aligned Climate Capital has started raising money for a new $500 million fund aimed at buying and building solar and battery storage projects around the country. The fund, its seventh, will focus on "middle-market" projects — mid-size solar and storage installations rather than huge utility plants or small rooftop systems. That includes community solar arrays, which let people subscribe to a shared local solar project instead of putting panels on their own roof, and "behind-the-meter" systems built directly at businesses, factories, or institutions to power those sites.

The firm already has more than 500 megawatts of potential projects lined up and has previously funded 56 projects across 10 states, producing over 218 gigawatt-hours of electricity. Recent deals include $33 million for two community solar projects in Delaware and a community solar development in Illinois.

For a homeowner, this isn't a program you'd apply to directly — it's a sign of where solar investment money is flowing. But it does point to something worth watching: community solar is expanding in more states, driven partly by rising electricity demand from data centers and other industries straining the grid. Because new natural gas power plants face long construction delays, solar-plus-battery projects are becoming one of the fastest ways utilities can add capacity. If community solar subscriptions become available in your area, that could offer a way to get credit for solar power without installing panels on your own home. Availability still depends on what your state and local utility allow.
