Alef welcomes Tesla to the electric flying car race by flying over the Roadster [Video]

October 16, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This news is about electric flying cars, not home energy upgrades, so it has nothing to do with your house or energy bills. Still, here is what happened: a California startup called Alef Aeronautics released a video of its electric flying car soaring over Tesla's new Roadster, marking what it calls Tesla's entry into the "flying car race." Alef says it has been developing flying cars for eleven years and that its vehicle, unlike an eVTOL (a vehicle that takes off and lands straight up and down like a helicopter), can also drive and park like a normal car.

Alef's flying car uses electric propulsion spread across multiple small motors rather than the thrusters expected in Tesla's Roadster. Alef's vehicle already holds an FAA safety certification from 2023, while Tesla's Roadster would still need to go through a separate, often multi-year FAA certification process before it could fly. Alef has logged 1,000 flights of its own vehicle and says it has taken more than 3,600 pre-orders worth $1 billion, with hand-built cars now in production at its Silicon Valley facility. A small batch is expected to reach early buyers by the end of 2026 for real-world testing.

None of this affects home energy costs or upgrades. It is simply a glimpse at where electric vehicle technology may be headed next, with a price tag starting near $300,000 for Alef's first model.
