AEP in deal to buy up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring linear generators

October 15, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 21

American Electric Power, which serves about 5.6 million customers across Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia, has agreed to buy up to 1.6 gigawatts of generating equipment from Mainspring Energy over the next eight years, a deal that could be worth up to $4 billion. The first 190 megawatts arrive next year, with AEP able to buy roughly 200 megawatts a year after that. The equipment is called a linear generator: a unit that can run on natural gas, biogas or hydrogen and can be installed within about 12 months. AEP says the flexibility helps it respond quickly to rising power demand and to back up renewable energy sources when they're not producing.

Separately, AEP plans to spend about $4 billion on a 702-megawatt fuel cell power plant near Cheyenne, Wyoming, using fuel cells from Bloom Energy. Fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction rather than by burning fuel, and this project will also include carbon capture technology aimed at near-zero emissions. Construction is set to start this year, with the plant coming online in 2028. The power is earmarked for Google under a 20-year purchase agreement, part of a broader push to supply the growing electricity demand from data centers.

Neither project involves residential customers directly, and there's no mention of rate impacts or rebate programs tied to this news. It mainly signals how utilities like AEP are scrambling to add new power sources quickly as demand grows, largely driven by data centers and large commercial users.
