AAF’s New HEPA Filter Cuts Weight by Up to 40%

September 15, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 35

AAF International has launched a new air filter called the AstroCel III Aero, a high-efficiency HEPA filter (the type that traps very fine particles, including allergens and dust) built with a plastic frame instead of the usual metal one. The company says it weighs up to 40% less than traditional metal-framed versions while still filtering out 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns, a standard HEPA benchmark.

This filter is aimed mainly at large commercial and industrial buildings, like hospitals, labs, data centers, and cleanrooms, where systems have dozens or hundreds of filters that need regular changing. The lighter weight is meant to make shipping and installation easier and less physically demanding for maintenance crews in those big systems. It's also designed as a drop-in replacement for existing filter setups, so those facilities wouldn't need to modify their equipment to use it. The filter meets a fire-safety standard (UL 900) that supports compliance with HVAC fire codes, and its V-shaped design allows more air to pass through with less resistance, which can lower fan energy use and stretch out time between changeouts.

None of this is aimed at typical home HVAC systems or standard furnace filters. If you're a homeowner, this particular filter isn't something you'd install yourself, since it's built for commercial-scale air handling, not the filter slot in a house. It's more relevant if your home happens to sit near, or you work at, a facility using industrial-grade air filtration.
