750 Gigawatts Of Energy Storage, And Nowhere To Go — Yet
Battery storage for the power grid is booming, but the numbers show a big gap between plans and what actually gets built. Nationwide, about 750 gigawatts of storage projects are waiting in line for a grid connection — roughly equal to the output of more than 700 nuclear reactors. The typical wait for that connection is now five years, because the grid's aging infrastructure can't easily absorb new capacity. Research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that of storage and power-plant projects that applied for grid connections between 2000 and 2020, only 13 percent were actually up and running by the end of 2025, while 75 percent were withdrawn entirely.
Even with that bottleneck, storage keeps growing. Installed capacity is expected to nearly quadruple over the next six years, and manufacturing is expanding too: the South Korean company DeltaX just picked Monroe, Georgia, for a $141 million factory making batteries for grid storage.
None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades directly, but it matters for context: more battery storage paired with solar and wind is reshaping the grid you draw power from, and slow grid-connection approvals are part of why some clean-energy projects near you may take years to come online. The related issue of grid reliability — including how data centers can suddenly disconnect and strain voltage across huge areas — is also part of the bigger picture utilities are wrestling with as they plan future upgrades.
