2 GW HVDC Is Becoming Standard. The Rest Of The Grid Isn’t.
This is a story about the big power grid, not something that changes what happens at your house, but it helps explain why some regional grid upgrades take longer than others. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines move large amounts of electricity over long distances, and the industry is now settling on a standard size for this equipment, around 2 gigawatts, in Europe, with similar patterns emerging in the U.S. and India. That standardization should make these big transmission projects faster and cheaper to build, since manufacturers can produce a repeatable design instead of engineering each one from scratch.
The harder problem is what surrounds the equipment. As power plants that used to stabilize the grid retire and more electricity comes from wind, solar, and other sources connected through electronic converters, the grid needs new ways to stay stable. The rules for how these converters should behave are not yet standardized across regions, and getting equipment from different manufacturers to work together smoothly is still a work in progress. There is also a planning gap: big transmission lines often cross state or national borders, and North America in particular lacks strong institutions for coordinating those projects and deciding who pays for them.
None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades or rebates right now. It is a reminder that the grid feeding your home is going through a slow, complicated modernization behind the scenes, one that affects how reliably renewable power reaches your area over the coming years.
